A warm welcome (rewelcome) to the Horizon West area. This is a completely redone restaurant with new interior, some new staff, new menu, and I believe new ownership. Let’s get on to the review.
Overall this was a very positive visit and we will be back. Loved the Speakeasy, the decor, and most of the food.
Speakeasy: Small, cozy, dark, and speakeasy vibes are there definitely. It is fairly loud if there is one loudtalker in there which can be a bit overwhelming. Direct access to the bar, but if people are sitting in the seats at the bar or right in front of it you cannot get to the bar. The fireplace was a creative video, but the advertising on the video completely takes you out of the vibe. Overall, very positive on the speakeasy.
Drinks: only tried the Chocolate Stout which was a happy hour special (all drafts were 2.00 off I believe). It was quite good. Would have loved a Belhaven Black, but this was a good alternative. Positive on the one drink
Food: let’s start with the highlight: scotch egg! This was the best Scotch Egg I have ever had… and I always try it if served. It is a good test of the rest of the meal. The egg was cooked perfectly, they are often overcooked, but this was perfect. The sausage was spicy and crispy, perfectly done as well. The sauce looked average but was actually quite good. I give it a 10/10, well done.
For mains, we had a Toad in the hole and a Bangers and mash.
Toad in the hole: presented a little differently than I am used to, it had the sausage cut into bite sized pieces and missed in the puff. I am not sure if this is why the puff didn’t rise as much as I would expect. I believe it need the space between the sausage to rise and it didn’t really have that and left it dense. The sausage was typical English sausage and was fairly average. It was served with Broccoli which was well received. Overall, a bit of a miss and I will not order it again.
Bangers and Mash: Same typical English sausage, but served whole so more what you would expect. The mashed potatoes were lumpy, but plentiful. I would have much preferred a smoother mash. The gravy was very good and saved the dish. I would consider ordering this again but it would make an immense impact to pay more attention to the potatoes. Served with Peas, which were not very good and gave hints of industrial cans of peas and I would suggest passing on them or changing them out.
Service: quite good service. Very happy with this portion of the meal. Asked for feedback and was genuinely interested in the feedback.
This was a good visit, we will be back. I really like the revamped feel and I think the menu is improved. They are still ramping up so there are bound to be some bumps in a new menu and some new staff. Overall, well done but someway to improve on. Thank you for the positive experience!
